This year’s UEFA Europa league Final will be played at Baku the capital city of Azerbaijan.
Baku is located along the southern shore of the absheron peninsula.
The city got its nickname “city of winds” from its harsh winds the name “Baku” might have also been coined from the Persian phrase ” Bad Kube” which in translations means blown upon by the mountain wind.
Baku is the largest city in Azerbaijan, its also the largest city on the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus region. The city is located 28 meters above sea level, this makes Baku the lowest lying national capital in the world and also the largest city in the world to be located below sea level.
Baku is divided into twelve administrative raions and a total of 48 townships. The city has at least two renowned UNESCO world heritage sites which includes the Maiden Tower
and the Shirvanshah’s Palace.
Baku is also considered among the world’s top ten destination for Urban night life. In Baku you will find the Baku international sea port that is capable of handling up to 2 million tons of both general and bulk cargos per year.
The city main source of economic growth is its oil (petroleum). In the 1800 Baku was said to have the world largest oil field, however this continued up until the 20th century. Baku was a part of the the Soviet Union. Other source of economic growth includes production of electrical machineries, food processing, production of chemicals and production of construction materials. The major ethnic group in the city is know and the Azerbaijani’s, but also you can find a vast number of Russians in the city.
This is not the first time the city will host an international event. In 2015 the city participated in the hosting of the 2015 European games, while in 2012 the city hosted the 57th Eurovision song contest. The city has also hosted the 4th Islamic solidarity games, the city also started hosting the F1 Azerbaijan grand Prix since 2016 and now it will host the 2018-2019 UEFA Europa league Final. In what is considered an all English final.
The city will also be one of the hosting cities for the 2020 UEFA Euro games.
