Indonesia tsunami leaves scores dead and homeless


A tsunami that hit Sunda Strait has left at least two hundred people dead, and more injured. Most people believe that the tsunami had been caused by the volcanic eruption that occurred on Mount Anak Krakatua. Although official’s of the Indonesian government are still investigating what could have caused the tsunami.

Indonesia is not new to earthquakes and tsunami issues, in 2014 a series of huge waves caused an earthquake in the Indian ocean which lead to the killings of about 228,000 people in a total of 13 countries and the huge part of that death toll came from Indonesia. Also Indonesia lies on the Ring of fire, the line considered to be frequent with earthquake and volcanic eruptions.

Still in September over 2000 people died when a earthquake struck the island of Sulawesi, this earthquake also lead to a tsunami that engulfed the city of Palu.

Addressing the issue at a conference held on the island of Java the National Disaster Management Agency spokesperson Nugroho Purwo Sutopo said that the risk of a new tsunami wasn’t over, he further added that the advice from the Metrology, Climatology and the Geophysical Agency (BMKG) are that people should not carry out activities on the beach, also that people are to stay away from the beach because the potential for a fresh tsunami is still possible due to the fact that the volcanic activities on Mount Anak Krakatua still conissues.

The president of Indonesia commenting on the issue took to his twitter handle to offer his prayers and condolence to the families and individuals affected by the tsunami
